APPLICATIONS |
||
Folinic acid, chemically reduced derivative of folic acid
(5-formyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydrofolate), acts as a coenzyme carrier in certain
folate-mediated reactions but does not require dihydrofolate reductase activity.
Thus, it is used as a calcium salt to counteract the toxic effects of folic acid
antagonists (e.g., methotrexate) and for treatment of megaloblastic anemias;
administered intramuscularly. Leucovorin is also used in combination
with fluorouracil to treat cancer of the colon. The chemical designation is
N-(4-(((2-Amino-5-formyl-1,4,5,6, 7,8- hexahydro- 4-oxo-6- pteridinyl) methyl)
amino) benzoyl)-L-glutamic
acid, calcium salt (1:1). |
